Gambling Commission looking to bring in affordability checks for online gambling
Today marks the end of the Gambling Commission’s consultation inviting the general public to have their say on the proposal to enforce strict ‘affordability assessments’ on the millions of people who enjoy online betting.
The changes that are under consideration will include:
- Limits on online stakes, prizes and “spin speeds”.
- Tough affordability checks.
- A testing regime for new products.
- A sports sponsorship ban.
- New powers to tackle the parallel market.
- Legal redress for wronged punters.
- A mandatory levy to fund addiction treatment.
Under the proposal, Ministers will consider whether they will force gambling companies to limit the monthly losses of customers and perform very strict affordability checks to ensure people aren’t gambling beyond their means.
My gambling is a problem, what can I do about it?
Here at Scottish Debt Help we can help you to perform something called a GAMSTOP.
GAMSTOP is a little-known, online tool that enables people to self-exclude themselves from gambling – both online and in bookies.
Obviously, it’s down to you to stick to your self-exclusion, but, once you place yourself on the list – which you do online, in a central list, that all gambling companies have access to, by providing a variety of details – gambling companies should take reasonable steps to prevent you from gambling should you try to; online or in-store.
